What is a Birth Certificate and Why do I need a birth certificate?

A birth certificate is one of the mostimportant legal documents used toestablish identity. It shows who youare, when you were born, and whereyou were born. A birth certificate isrequired for many things during aperson’s life, such as:

• enrolling a child in school
• participating in youth sports
• getting a Social Security card
• obtaining a driver’s license
• applying for a passport


The Legal Framework

In India, it is mandatory under the law to register every birth/stillbirth with the concerned State/UT Government within 21 days of its occurrence. The Government accordingly has provided for a well-defined system for registration of Birth, with the Registrar General at the centre and the Chief Registrars in the States, running through district registrars to the village and town registrars at the periphery.

Child’s Parents Aadhaar Card.
Child’s Parents (ID Proof of any one) Voter Card/Passport/Driving License etc.
Parents Passport Size 2-2 Photoes.
